When packing for your Tanzania family safari, include lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes, sun protection, insect repellent, and a camera or binoculars. While we may be slightly biased, we think it’s the best place for a family holiday. Children are always welcome in Tanzania, and we love having their energetic enthusiasm with us during safari trips into the wilderness. Tanzania is also diverse, full of unique cultural experiences, beautiful natural beaches, stunning lodges, natural splendor, and Africa’s largest mountain. No matter what you choose, whether a family safari package or a trip to Kilimanjaro, you’re certain to end up with a wonderful family holiday in Tanzania.
For sure! While many think of safaris as a more ‘mature’ holiday, there is something timelessly beautiful about experiencing the unspoiled nature of Tanzania on a family safari. Younger kids, teenagers, and adults have all loved their experiences with us on safari in Tanzania. You can do a safari with kids as long as your kids can follow the local rules and directions while on safari (there are wild animals, after all). Bring favorites like The Lion King to life!
We tend to think that the best age is the age you are right now! But if you’re considering taking the family on vacation, the best age for kids is at least four years old. While we love seeing younger kids enjoying Tanzania, they’re more likely to forget their experiences or get distracted if they are any younger than four.
While most lodges are family-friendly and are happy to cater to larger parties, some of our favorites are Serengeti Soroi Lodge, Serengeti Serena Lodge, and Serengeti Tortilis Camp. However, depending on what you’re seeking for your family, we encourage you to check out our Where To Stay section to understand better the kinds of accommodations you’ll find in Tanzania and what will work best for your family and your budget.
Again, it all depends on what you want to see in Tanzania. But, to give you a quick answer, the Dry Season (June to October) is best if you’re looking to see lots of animals. If you’re keen on bird watching or seeing baby animals, the Wet Season (November to April) is better. But don’t worry – we’ve got much information to help you decide when to visit Tanzania!
There are so many options to choose from! Tanzania is famous for its national parks, which have diverse animals. It is probably best to figure out which African animals are most important for your children to see and make your decision based on that. For instance, if your kids are not very interested in seeing chimpanzees, give the Western Circuit a pass. Serengeti National Park is essential if they’re super excited to see The Great Wildebeest Migration. For more information on where to take the kids, please review our Where To Go section.
Nobody knows kids’ attention spans like their parents, so you may have to be the judge of this one. But while some kids may get bored quickly, it’s important to remember that these are large parks that can sometimes reach the size of small countries. The animals are not brought to the vehicles, and it may take some time to spot different animals, particularly the more elusive ones like leopards or rhinos. For these reasons, we recommend at least three days on safari to give your family a good chance of seeing what you want.
As far as possible! However, it is always important to book based on what time of year you decide to come. In high season, booking far in advance, even 12 months or more, is much more important. In the low season, it will probably be fine to book only a few months in advance. Tanzania is a popular destination, so booking before hotels sell out is important. Check out our When To Go section to help you figure out how far in advance to book. If you’re worried you’ve missed your booking ‘window,’ don’t stress – send us a message, and let’s see what we can do to make your safari dream a reality.
